DZR valves are ball valves made up of dezincification-resistant brass. Through-hull Fitting mechanism with a ball valve and hose tail is nearly universal in new boats. A ball valve is an opening and closing valve that controls the flow of fluid by the motion of a rotary ball having a bore in the valve. By rotating the ball at 90 degrees around its axis, the valve can either allow the medium to flow through or block it.
Evidently, while dealing with any equipment that penetrates the hull of a boat, the materials, design, and technique of installation are critical to the boat's safety and integrity. Many boats have been lost in history due to corroded through-hulls and seacock, either as a result of the electrolytic breakdown of the material or a failure of the valve mechanism attached to it.

DZR VS Standard Brass
Dezincification-resistant (DZR) brass is the name given to a class of copper alloys containing more than 15% zinc and containing elements such as arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) in controlled amounts to inhibit the selective dissolution of zinc caused by contact with various types of water, including seawater. Hot-formed DZR brass components require a regulated heat treatment to ensure excellent dezincification resistance.
Brass is a common metal alloy composed of copper and zinc. When exposed to particular combinations of pH and chloride concentrations, it can experience a severe form of corrosion called dezincification. This is where the zinc dissolves out of the brass, weakening and damaging the alloy's mechanical characteristics.
Why is DZR Preferred in Seawater?
Seawater is an extremely effective electrolyte and causes disastrous effects on standard valves made of brass. Metal fittings in contact with seawater are highly corroded, and while brass does not rust in the same manner as steel does, it can lose its zinc content, degrade and become brittle. Electric current leakage from the boat earths through the water and dissolves the metal pieces in a process called electrolytic corrosion and results in dezincification. Surejust DZR valves are made of traceable, high-grade dezincification resistant brass alloy, which minimizes corrosion risk, especially when forged.
Dezincification can cause a system failure in HVAC applications by generating leaks, blockages, or even ruptures. As a result, it is understandably a prominent factor in system design.
